I have been paying attention on the modern and retro games and even yesterday I went to a retro game store. I have seen many great low prices on the more common games and consoles. But besides the Nintendo GameCube the usual gaming consoles like the Sega Saturn is still high priced unfortunately. I do see many great deals especially on Sony PSP and Sony PlayStation 3. Cool video. ^_^

I think digital will be beloved by many in the future but many hard-core gamers in the future will love and seek out retro games. But many would come together to make a retro game museum and you can play the games. I personally feel like I only want a few more retro games then I'm done. I do still find random fun and amazing games like yesterday I found aNintendo GameBoy game that was fun. I think gaming as a hobby will always be a thing rather new or retro games It will live on. Cool video. ^_^

That's why you buy digital. Price doesn't go up. If you're willing to pay more for physical, then you're part of the problem. If you don't buy from scalpers, then they can't charge it anymore.

The buyer determines the price. It's not like resellers are sitting here with every copy of mario 64 saying "haha you have to pay 200 or you don't get one". No you'll just go somewhere else. Resellers find prices based on SOLD items on ebay(which is where most of pricecharting gets its prices). In fact if you want to blame anyone, blame the collectors. As more people collect, there are fewer of these games in the market meaning their value goes up. Resellers just adapt to the market because it is what they CAN sell something for. However, I don't think anyone is to blame. This stuff has happened in TCG for years, and comic books and most other collectables. Market shifts, and the people that get the best deals are the ones constantly looking for them. The fact is that resellers are the ones constantly looking for these deals. 2 weeks ago I bought an xbox 360 with 2 controllers, a kinect and 28 games for 70 dollars and resold it all for 200 online. If you want cheaper games, think like a reseller and get out there!

I sold my GameCube and 15 games for $750 last year. It’s crazy what people will pay for Nintendo stuff. I didn’t even have any rare games included. The most rare was a pokemon game. Gale of Darkness. Everything else was basic Mario and such. I ended up just buying a modded Wii with a hard drive and every GameCube game ever for $300 lol no way I’m gonna pay $150 for MGS twin snakes.

Fascinating take on the market. Will Japanese Games be like the UK first edition of Harry Potter (where the original, non-NA, 1st print sells for more than the the NA, 1st print) or a 'No Rarity' Pokemon card or yugioh card (where collectors hardly acknowledge the 'true' first print for decades)? I understand that different collecting categories look at this question differently. It seems like you're getting at the idea that folks are going off of some uneducated yet cautious optimism that the former may happen some day - the "VGA 90 or bust" definitely resonates with that thought. I like to imagine a book collector seeing a super scarce King James Bible come up in auction and simply saying, "Nah. I prefer uncirculated copies." Is the optimism justified? I understand that we didn't see synchronized release dates between NA/Japan for Nintendo's mainline games until the Nintendo Switch, so the first prints for anything Nintendo/Sony are probably going to be consistently Japanese going into the late 2010s. Especially into the 2000s, Japanese games got much better cover art. On the downside, the supply might be too high for some of this stuff - I understand Japanese collectors are generally famous for keeping these items in pristine condition but also are only starting to get into graded stuff. Even then, it's just to sell abroad over YJ or Ebay instead of owning (whereas I'm sure plenty of Brits are actively trying to get a UK first print of Harry Potter) - that could result in very different market sizes. Honestly, I think the market's trajectory is just going to be a function of how many moderately wealthy folks take sustained interest in this category. I was trying to do some price modeling for an antiques hobby, and the big "price prediction" variable that I accidentally got at was, "which rich people collect this particular thing?" Very excited to see what happens!

And a literal piece of paper that anyone can copy and reprint 🙄😒 these scalpers and people just trying to make money off the game that don’t even care about it are trash

I’m interested to hear a comparison between the current Japanese video game market and the early Japanese trading card market. There’s probably some similarities between the two categories. Also generally interested to see how the Japanese market will play out with Japanese culture emphasizing preservation and collecting of older video game items more so than the US
